Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday renewed her call that the international community give priority to catering to the needs of Bangladesh and other most vulnerable countries (MVCs) in adaptation, technology transfer and capacity building for tackling the challenges stemming from the calamitous global climate change, reports UNB.
She came up with the call for help when United Kingdom' s Minister in the Department for Environ-ment, Food and Rural Areas Jim Fitzpatrick MP, accompanied by his wife, paid a courtesy call on her at the Prime Minister's Office.
"The need of the MVCs in adaptation, technology transfer and capacity building should get priority," the Prime Minister said.
On parliamentary affairs, the Prime Minister reiterated her government's strong commitment to further strengthening parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh.
She thanked the British government and other European nations for their support and assistance to holding the December 29, 2008 election in a free, fair, neutral and acceptable manner and thus restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
The British Minister at the meeting praised Hasina for her strong leadership in the international forums regarding establishing global unity to combat the challenges and arranging funds for climate-change adaptation, said Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad.
Hasina mentioned the recently adopted 'Bangla-desh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan 2009', the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) and Climate Change Trust Fund to show the country's earnest preparation for tackling the perilous impacts of climate change.
She also highlighted adaptation plans taken up by her government in managing disasters, adapting agriculture, ensuring food security, dredging major rivers, building embankments, reclaiming lands, creating green belts, developing coastal forests and adaptation programmes for infrastructure, water, health and research sectors.
The Prime Minister also mentioned Bangladesh's desire for hosting the proposed International Climate Adaptation Centre in Bangladesh.
In this regard, she expressed gratitude to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for his initiatives in arranging funds for the countries falling miserable victims to the climate calamities.
