PM's call to root out terrorism from region

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon the Asia-Pacific countries to help each other root out terrorism from this region and ensuring fundamental rights of general masses aiming at building a hunger and poverty free peaceful world.
She made the call while inaugurating the 3-day 13th 'APG Typologies Workshop', jointly organised by Bangladesh Bank and the Asia Pacific Group (APG) at a hotel in the city Tuesday morning, reports BSS.
Chaired by Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, the function was also addressed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Principal Executive Officer of APG David Shanon and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Ziaul Hasan Siddiqui.
Terming terrorist activities and money earned through corruption the prime causes of money laundering, she said money laundering and terrorism financing are the multidimensional global problems, which require global solutions.
Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh wants to closely work with the APG and other international organisations to prevent money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes.
She said all out measures against money laundering and terrorism financing have been taken up in the country by enacting 'Money Laundering Prevention Act'. Among the South Asian countries, Bangladesh is the first country that passed the act, she added.
She said in order to strengthen the existing Anti-Money Laundering Act, Jatiya Sangsad has also passed Money Laundering Prevention and Anti-Terrorism Act- 2009.
Besides, Sheikh Hasina said her government is fully committed to implementing the relevant international conventions, particularly the recommendations of the global Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
She said a high-powered National Committee on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing has been constituted in the country recently with the responsibility to formulate and implement relevant policy strategies.
