Sunday, 28 November 2010

The five-day 'important' Japan visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina begins Sunday as she left Brussels for Frankfurt, Germany en route to Tokyo Saturday noon, according to a message received in Dhaka, reports BSS.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Mission to European Union Ms Ismat Jahan and top officials of foreign ministry of Belgium saw the Bangladesh Premier off at the airport.
The maiden visit to Japan by Bangladesh's Premier after assuming office for the second time is considered 'significant' from diplomatic point of view as Dhaka and Tokyo termed the tour 'timely and important' for promoting bilateral cooperation, especially in economic sector.
"The Japan visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a timely step as issues of bilateral cooperation would be widely discussed during the tour," said Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni at a press conference in Dhaka recently.
Besides, Japanese Amba-ssador to Bangladesh Tomotsu Shinotsuka termed the visit very important saying that positive discussions will take place between Dhaka and Tokyo, particularly on Japanese assistance in constructing the much-awaited Padma Bridge.
During her visit to Japan, Sheikh Hasina will hold talks with her Japanese counterpart Naoto Kan and also have an audience with Emperor Akihito.
She will address a number of investment conferences and hold meetings with representatives of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan External Trade Organisation, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to discuss investment, economic cooperation and development issues.
Japan is the largest bilateral donor to Bangladesh and its cumulative assistance has so far amounted to more than US$ 8.0 billion, which is even bigger than the assistance from the United States and the United Kingdom combined.
Meanwhile FE Correspondent in Dhaka adds: A 35-member high powered business delegation left Dhaka for Japan Saturday to join as entourage of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) A K Azad is leading the delegation while first vice-president and directors of FBCCI and other leading businessmen of the country are also in the team.
During the visit the delegation will attend several programmes in Japan including a seminar on 'Bangladesh Business'. The seminar will be organised by Japan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) where the Prime Minister will deliver the key-note paper. The FBCCI president will deliver speech on behalf of the private sector business community on that occasion.
The delegation expects to explore new avenues of trade and investment during the visit and have interactions with the Japanese business community.
The business delegation will also attend 16th Meeting of Japan-Bangladesh Joint Committee for Commercial and Economic Cooperation which will be organised by JCCI.
