Poachers roam free

Monday, 22 December 2008

Following preventive action against hunting, the deer population in the Bangladesh part of the Sunderbans has been rising. But surreptious hunting, now, is causing fresh concern. Deer meat or venison and skin are coveted for the taste of the meat, and the skin for sale value. Poachers roam free to hunt the deer with ease. Not only deer, other animals such as alligators are similarly poached in the Bangladesh side of the Sunderbans. Thus, the unique wildlife in one of the prized forest lands of the world, is facing a threat.
Hunting and fishing outside the reserved forest areas are not prohibited. The laws only prohibit excessive fishing, catching of fish fries and migratory birds. But hardly these restrictions are observed. It is really shocking that poaching activities can be carried out so easily in the prime reserved forest of the county . Preservation of wildlife and biodiversity, now a global concern, is shared by all or nearly all the countries of the world. Bangladesh, being a signatory to the international conventions to this end, it is unacceptable that this country continues to be a happy hunting ground for the poachers.
