Poet Shamsur Rahman remembered

Shamsur Rahman was the poet of independence in Bengali literature, speakers have said at a discussion, held in the city in memory of the renowned poet and litterateur. The 8th death anniversary of poet Shamsur Rahman was observed on Sunday through various programmes. Wreaths were placed on the grave of the poet by his family members, relatives and friends, Jatiya Kabita Parishad (JKP), Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote (BSJ), Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parishad and Bangabandhu Abritti Sangsad and some cosio-cultural bodies and students organisations. Addressing a memorial meeting poet Habibullah Siraji said 'Shamsur Rahman was the poet of independence in Bengali literature.' He said Shamsur Rahman had a mighty pen. He wrote numerous poetries against the torture carried out by the occupation forces on the people of Bangladesh from colonial rule to the genocide in 1971. He wrote poetries on events from the great language movement (1952) to movements of 1962, '66, mass upsurge movement of '69 and the great Liberation War in 1971. A discussion was also held at the central office of BSJ. Discussants recalled the contribution of the poet in all democratic movements leading to the country's independence struggles. Marking the day, another discussion meeting was held at Kalyanpur office of Jatiya Ganotantrik League, according to a news agency.
