Poison in our daily foods

Saturday, 13 September 2014

Since, by and large, most of our farmers are illiterate and unaware of many food-related hazards, it contributes to the penetration of harmful toxic elements into our body through food items. The farmers are always misled by a section of unscrupulous people. They need to be mercilessly discouraged from this practice. They, in fact, patronise criminal acts in agriculture that leaves a debilitating impact on the health of the citizens of Bangladesh.
How is this happening? Should not these blatant acts open the eyes of our responsible authorities and engage them in a fight to confront and eliminate these dangerous practices?
Parliament must pass relevant laws, at the earliest --- so that all culprits and their associates and advisers can be stringently brought to book. It is a crime similar to supporting and assisting murderers and killers. They deserve no mercy for such a hideous crime, which is virtually worse than the use of 'poison gas' during the First World War.
I wonder how many of our agricultural graduates with Honours in bio-chemistry are aware of all these chemicals. Where do all these chemicals come from? Are these produced in Bangladesh; or imported or smuggled into the country? This needs to be investigated into immediately.
The government must act on it at the earliest. It should also pass stringent laws to fight such crimes. These crimes should warrant higher degrees of punishment.
We should mobilise the country's relevant institutions like BRRI, BARC and various agricultural development and campaign-related departments, putting them on a 'war-footing' to go all-out to uproot this dangerous practice from the country. Mixing harmful chemicals with agro-products literally needs to be eradicated from the soil of Bangladesh, once and for all.
