Poland may back Commission\\\'s energy saving targets if compensated

Sunday, 10 August 2014

WARSAW Aug 9 (Reuters) :  Poland may support European energy-saving targets if planned legislation includes compensation for more carbon-dependent countries, the government's climate policy chief was quoted as saying on Saturday.
Last month, the European Commission put forward a target to improve energy savings by 30 per cent as part of efforts to curb the European Union's reliance on Russian gas imports.
Member states will have to discuss the proposed goal and have set themselves a deadline of October to agree on climate and energy policy for 2030.
They must decide on whether the target should be binding on individual nations or at an EU-wide level and precisely how the 30 per cent reduction in energy use compared with projected business as usual should be calculated.
In an interview with state agency PAP, Poland's Marcin Korolec called the Commission's proposal "interesting."
