FE REPORT | Tuesday, 5 September 2023

Airport Police Station personnel detained four officers and employees of the Custom House Dhaka (CHD) for questioning over the missing of 55 kg of gold from a vault at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital.
The detained persons were Shahidul Islam, Saidul Islam Shahed, Masum Rana and Muzammel Hossain, police sources said.
Earlier, a case was filed with the police station on Monday over theft of around 55.51 kg of gold from a highly secured customs warehouse at the HSIA. CHD assistant revenue officer Mohammad Sohrab Hossain filed the case.
Unknown persons were accused in the case, Md Towhidul Islam, additional deputy commissioner - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Airport zone, told The Financial Express.
The customs authorities kept seized gold in two storages or vaults of the HSIA. The gold-bars and ornaments might have been seized from 2020 to this August, said sources.
Customs Commissioner A K M Nurul Huda Azad said the gold had been stolen from one of the vaults that contained about 200 kg of gold-bars and ornaments.
On Saturday, the officers concerned opened the vault and found that about 55 kg of the precious metal was missing.
He said they informed police and intelligence agencies of the theft. The CHD also formed a five-member probe committee in this regard.
According to the Customs Act 1969, the customs must deposit seized gold to the Bangladesh Bank (BB) within seven days of the seizure.
On keeping gold for a long time, the commissioner said the gold owners were supposed to take the gold-bars and ornaments after paying fine and tax, and so those were not deposited to the BB.
The warehouse is kept under constant CCTV surveillance, as it is usually used to store seized supplies of smuggled and illegal gold, according to the customs officials who monitor CCTV cameras and the overall security protocols.
