NARSINGDI, Dec 22 (UNB): More than 30 BNP activists were injured as police baton charged them while they were preparing to accord a reception to their leader Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan at Parulia in Palash Upazila today defying Section 144.
The police said BNP organised the reception to Dr Moyeen on his elevation to the party's standing committee at Parulia playground at 11am.
The activists of Awami Swechhasebak League also arranged a discussion on the Victory Day at the venue and at the same time.
Apprehending trouble, the administration imposed Section 144 in the area restricting both the parties holding their functions.
As BNP leaders and activists tried to hold the reception defying the ban, the police rushed to the spot and used sticks to disperse the crowd. This led to the clash that left more than 30 people injured. Three cops were also injured during the clash.
The injured were taken to the Upazila Health Complex. Outraged by the police attack, the BNP supporters ransacked shops at Parulia Bazar.
Additional police personnel were deployed to quell the situation.
BNP Secretary General Khandker Delwar Hossain strongly denounced the attack on the BNP function and accused the police of patronising the ruling Awami League activists.
In a statement, he said the attack on political opponents is a manifestation of autocratic mentality.
He advised the ruling party to exercise tolerance. Otherwise people will give a befitting reply.
