Police disperse Jamaat procession in city

Police have dispersed a flash procession by Jamaat-e-Islami supporters at Badda in Dhaka after a court verdict on their leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee. Sayadee ’s death penalty was reduced to ‘imprisonment until death’ on Wednesday by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Supporters of Jamaat and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir were seen gathering for a procession near Cambrian College on Wednesday 1:00pm, said Gulshan Police OC Rafikul Islam. ‘Police blank-fired in air and dispersed the protesters.’ He said. Three people have been arrested and more policemen have been deployed in the area. Jamaat announced a 2-phase nationwide 48-hour general strike for Thursday and Sunday hours after the verdict on Sayedee, according to bdnews24.com.
