CHITTAGONG, Apr 11: The police foiled a workers' conference of Jatiya Party (Kazi Jafar) and a protest rally of JP (Ershad) today as both the factions called meetings in the city's Shaheed Minar area.
Jatiya Party (Jafar) convened the workers' conference at the Muslim Hall on Friday afternoon. President of the party Kazi Jafar was scheduled to address the workers at 4.00 pm. BNP central vice chairman Abdulla al Noman and city BNP president Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury were also scheduled to address the meeting.
Meanwhile, Chittagong city unit of Jatiya Party (Ershad) also called a protest rally in the central Shaheed Minar opposite Muslim Hall on the day.
Officer- in- charge of Kotwali police station Mohiuddin Selim said both the factions have called programmes in the same place and we have removed both the groups to avoid confrontation.
Secretary of JP (Ershad) city unit Tapan Chakraborty said they had convened a rally in the Shaheed Minar for today on April 2 to protest cases filed against party chairman Hussain Mohammed Ershad.
But the police foiled their programme and they took shelter in the nearby Theatre Institute being chased by the police. However, they organised a rally in front of the Press Club which was addressed, among others, by president of the city unit Solaiman Alam Seth.
