Police making strike-eve arrests: BNP

The BNP has alleged that police are raiding houses and arresting its leaders and activists across Bangladesh a day ahead of the 20-Party Alliance's nationwide shutdown.Party’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing Sunday afternoon claimed police were also implicating their supporters in false cases."This is their (the government) old strategy to thwart strike." The BNP-led coalition decided to enforce the general strike  Monday protesting against denial of permission for their Gazipur rally and pressing for release of the arrested leaders, including BNP Standing Committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy. Rizvi said, "The strike will be observed on Monday across the country. At the media call at the party's Naya Paltan headquarters, the BNP leader said over 100 leaders and activists were arrested in different districts including Dhaka until Sunday evening, according to a news agency.
