Police needs to be more gender-sensitive in police stations

Thursday, 13 September 2007

UNDP's Senior Adviser for Police Reform and ex-Adviser to caretaker government (CG) ASM Shahjahan Wednesday said the police need to be more gender sensitive in police stations to help women get proper policing services comfortably, reports UNB.
"A gender-sensitive policing approach will also contribute towards progressive improvement in Bangladesh's police services," he said at the inaugural function of a two-day orientation for police officers on "Gender Sensitivity: Key to preventing violence against women".
The Police Reform Pro-gramme (PRP) organised the orientation programme, aiming to make police officers well-aware of the issues relating to gender, understand the process of socialisation and gender and undertake measures against domestic violence, trafficking, and sexual harassment from the model police stations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed, acting Project Manager and PRP's Anti-Trafficking in Human Beings Adviser Neale Fursdon, Crime Prevention and Community Safety Adviser Kumar Koirala and Gender Consultant Fawzia Khondker Eva were, among others, present.
