Police now will act on 'lawful order': DMP Commissioner

Monday, 10 September 2007

The police will act on "lawful order" under a new law in the making to replace the outmoded one, as massive changes are now taking place in the country, reports UNB.
"When the Police Act was introduced in 1861, the rule was that police would march as per the order of competent authority. But, as per the proposed new police act, police will march following lawful order," Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Naim Ahmed said Sunday.
He made the remarks while opening a training programme on Personnel Information Management System (PIMS) Software at the Telecom auditorium of Rajarbagh Police Lines.
Naim Ahmed told the audience that several projects would be taken up for improving police services, including one to stop harassment.
With the introduction of PIMS, he said, the police have been updated on IT systems from manual system.
"Information and data of every police personnel in detail will be available instantly from every unit across the country through the PIMS system," the DMP Commissioner said.
There are 123,000 members of Bangladesh Police. A total of 200 police personnel from 86 units across the country are being given training. The training ends on September 15.
Joint commissioners of DMP were present at the inaugural ceremony of PIMS.
