Police pick up BNP activists in city

Tuesday, 30 November 2010

FE Report
Police have picked up seven BNP activists from Paltan in the capital Monday when they tried to bring out a procession amid tight security measures taken by Dhaka Metropolitan Police on the eve of today's (Tuesday's) hartal.
Riot police posted around the party's headquarters at Naya Paltan went into action when dozens of BNP leaders and activists tried to bring out a procession backing the strike enforced by the main opposition.
The police action caused a scuffle between them as the strike supporters tried to move on ignoring the police barriers at about 4:00 pm. They were dispersed from the street immediately after the police intervention.
"Seven people, including BNP's general secretary of ward-56 unit of Dhaka City Corporation, were detained from the spot," a sub-inspector of Paltan Police Station said. "We did it only to maintain order in the capital," he added.
DMP has deployed nearly 8,000 additional police personnel who were posted at capital's key points to avert any unexpected incidents.
A senior DMP official said their members remained alert to foil any attempts to destabilise the city through anarchic activities.

BNP submits memo
to CMP chief
Our Chittagong Correspondent adds: Leaders of BNP Chittagong city unit have submitted a memorandum to the police commissioner urging him not to arrest or harass the party leaders and activists ahead of the nation-wide November 30 hartal.
A group of leaders from the main opposition party in parliament headed by BNP city unit president and former minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury handed the memorandum to CMP commissioner Abul Kashem at his office in the city this afternoon.
The memo said, some over-enthusiastic police officers were arresting their leaders from different parts of the city citing "orders from the government high-ups" and obstructing their rallies and political programmes ahead of the general strike.
