Police, RAB chiefs rule out sabotage over Dec 29 polls

Friday, 19 December 2008

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad and Director General (DG) of RAB Hasan Mahmud Khandaker Thursday dismissed the fear about sabotage over the December 29 parliament elections. Both, however, mentioned taking up special precautionary measures for the polls, reports UNB.
The two top bosses of the police and the elite security personnel made the remarks to reporters separately when their attention was drawn to some perceived public apprehensions about any such act to foil the elections.
"We don't have any specific information about any such apprehension. The way we have done certain work in last few years, we don't think terrorists will be able to do any sabotage," the IGP told reporters at Rajarbagh Police Lines where he went to witness the final match of the Police Football Championship-2008.
However, Nur didn't rule out scattered minor election-related incidents. "We've adopted all security measures keeping possible incidents in our head."
Asked about CDs and letters circulated by suspected militants, the IGP said they did not notice anything other than CDs and letters. "We're closely monitoring," he added.
On deposition of legal arms ahead of the polls as the deadline expired on December 14, he said legal actions would be taken against those who did not surrender their arms.
RAB Director General Hasan Mahmud Khandaker told the reporters at the RAB Headquarters that they did not apprehend any subversive act by militants that would affect the ensuing parliament elections.
He said they have prepared lists of religious militants and outlaws, and those who are trying to commit unwanted things are under strict surveillance. He said 6,000 RAB members would be engaged for election security.
