Police, RMG workers clash in Ctg: 12 hurt

Monday, 2 June 2008

Workers of three garment factories of Azim Group again demonstrated in Kalurghat BSCIC Industrial Area in Chittagong Sunday demanding increase in the minimum wages, reports UNB.

Police and witnesses said hundreds of workers of Orchid Sweater, Global Specialised Garments and Savar Sweater, all under the Azim Group, took to the street and put barricade on the road at about 9:30am. The workers also vandalised some 10/12 vehicles, and damaged some furniture and fittings of the three factories.

On information, police rushed to the spot but soon came under attack by the agitated workers. Police charged batons and lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control. At least 12 people, including two cops, were injured as the workers clashed with police.

Earlier, on May 6, the Azim Group increased workers' share of piece rate on each garment product and also their breakfast allowance following a series of demonstrations by the workers.
