In a surprise move, police have been deployed for the security of Narayanganj-5 by-polls contestant Rafiur Rabbi, father of slain A-level student Tanvir Mohammad Twaki. Rabbi, a leader of 'Nagarik Andolan', says he did not ask for police protection. Five policemen -- an assistant sub-inspector and four constables -- were assigned for him on Wednesday, days after Narayanganj MP Shamim Osman demanded protection for Rabbi. Osman feared he would be blamed if anything happened to Rabbi. But Rabbi had accused Osman of trying to create panic ahead of the polls. 'We assigned the policemen as per orders from higher authorities,' Narayanganj Sadar Model Police OC Manjur Kader said. Rabbi has been blaming the influential Osman family for his son's murder. He says contesting the by-polls is part of a demonstration seeking justice for Twaki. He said he was surprised when several policemen came to his house. 'I've been kept under constant surveillance since,' he said. 'A special branch officer and a gunman accompany me if I go anywhere. 'Rabbi demanded quizzing Osman after the telephone conversation between the MP and 7-murder prime suspect Nur Hossain was leaked. Osman, reacting to the leak, demanded security for Rabbi. Narayanganj-5 constituency fell vacant after the death of Shamim Osman’s brother Nasim Osman, an MP from the Jatiya Party (JP). The ruling Awami League has decided to leave the seat for the JP. The JP has nominated Shamim Osman’s brother Selim Osman to contest the by-polls, according to bdnews24.com.
