Police set condition for handing over Sumon’s body

Police have allegedly set a condition for handing over the body of Sumon Sheikh, 25, to his family, Jannat Akhter, wife of Sumon, told the media on Sunday afternoon.
He allegedly died in the Hatirjheel police station custody on Saturday.
Jannat Akhter alleged that they went to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the city on Sunday to receive Sumon's body.
But the police didn't hand it over to them citing the condition.
"We went to the morgue to receive the body. But the police didn't give it to us. They said if the body is taken to his hometown, Nawabganj, then it will be handed over. But if it is taken to the present address at Rampura in Dhaka, they won't release it,"Jannat Akhter said.
"My husband died. But we are not even getting his body," she lamented.
An official of Hatirjheel police preferring anonymity told the FF , "I am not allowed to talk in this regard. But the body is supposed to be handed over if the legal guardian is found."
Jannat Akhter said they would lodge a case against the police responsible.
They already approached Dhaka Court.
However, the lawyer they talked to was not receiving the phone now.
Jannat Akhter alleged her husband Suman Sheikh died in the custody of Hatirjeel police station on Saturday.
But police claimed that the victim (Suman) committed suicide , but his.angry relatives staged demonstrations in front of the police station on Saturday alleging that he was beaten to death by police in custody.
After the incident Sumon's family members, relatives and friends took to the street in front of the police station and demanded justice.
Police, however, said they arrested Sumon on Friday afternoon on the charge of a theft case and recovered about Tk0.31 million from his rented house at Rampura in the city.
A private firm filed the case on 15 August against him, claiming that he stole the company's Tk5.03 million.
But Sumon committed suicide by hanging himself from the ventilator with his trouser," police source said.
