Police should not serve only a political party: Dr Kamal
Sunday, 9 November 2014
Describing the police force as servants of the common man, Ganoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain has said that the law enforcers should not serve only a political party. ‘You (police) have to be servants of 160 million (16 crore) people. You’re not servants of any minister no matter how powerful he might be,’ the renowned jurist said while addressing the biannual conference of the New Market Thana unit of his party at Elephant Road in the city. Criticising Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed for his claims that the speeches of National Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman encourage militancy, Kamal Hossain, also a former foreign minister, said, ‘Don’t dare to insult Mizanur Rahman. Those whose blessings you are currently enjoying will not stand by you all the time.’ He also asked the force not to desecrate its national symbol deviating from its actual duty. Dr Kamal came down hard on the government for its failure to punish the killers of the four national leaders, and raised a question about its ability, according to a news agency.
