Police terrorising Keraniganj people: BNP

Tuesday, 12 April 2011

BNP has alleged that police, along with the ruling party hooligans, are terrorising opposition supporters in Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital, reports bdnews24.com . "Panic has gripped Keraniganj. it has become difficult for the BNP men to stay in the area as police, aided by Awami League (AL) hooligans, have established a reign of terror there," party's joint secretary general Amanullah Aman said Monday. "Even the miscreants of the ruling party loot residences at night," Aman, a former MP from the area, said at a press briefing at the National Press Club. On Apr 8, police and activists of BNP and its associate organisations clashed over the holding of party meeting blocking a road in Keraniganj from where Aman was elected lawmaker for four times. BNP claimed that over 100 of their leaders and activists were injured, a number of them with bullets, in the incident. Aman was 'detained' for three hours by police that day. The BNP leader at the news briefing alleged that the government's 'BKSAL-style practice of democracy' had become a nightmare for the Keraniganj people. "The people are also frustrated with the fascist rule of the Awami League-led alliance government," he continued. Aman termed the police statement to the media on the Keraniganj incident 'fabricated and exaggerated'. "Police made 4,000-5,000 people accused in the case filed in connection with the [Keraniganj] incident when there were as many as 3,000 people in the programme," he said.
