Police van burnt, 30 injured in hartal clash

FARIDPUR, Apr 4 (UNB):Pro-hartal activists clashed with police in Nagarkanda Upazila and burned down a police van in the first hours of the hartal enforced to protest women's equal share in property envisaged in the women development policy. Witnesses said police used batons and rubber bullets to control the angry picketers, resulting in injuries to about 20 people including seven policemen. The clash started at about 9am when police obstructed a procession of the pro-hartal activists. The Islamic Law Implementation Committee led by Maulana Mufti Aminee called the day long hartal throughout the country to protest the women development policy. 10 hurt in Habiganj bdnews24.com adds: At least 10 people, including five policemen, have been injured in a police-pickets clash in the district headquarters during the daylong countrywide shutdown. Madhabpur police chief Moin Uddin Ahmed was among the injured. Islamic Law Implementation Committee (ILIC) is enforcing the 6am to 6pm hartal to protest the women's policy, High Court ban on fatwa and the recently formulated education policy. Moin said the trouble erupted when some picketers barricaded a road in Madhabpur area and police tried to remove it in the morning. "Five policemen, including me, were injured as the picketers pelted brickbats on us," said the officer in charge of Madhabpur police station. The remaining injured policemen are: sub-inspectors Ashikul Islam, Nurul Islam and 'Utpal' and constable 'Hamid'.
