Policy summit to create confusion in public mind over JS poll: Zillur
Sunday, 21 September 2008
Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Saturday said the government's fresh move to arrange an all-party summit would only create confusion in public mind over the national election, reports UNB.
The AL leader also asked the government to put an end to its 'shameless misrule' and release all the AL leaders from jail.
"Don't play any more game⦠don't make mockery with the parliamentary polls. You've failed to hand over power in due time. Holding a policy summit now and any other such move will only confuse the people about the arrangement of the national election," Zillur said.
The veteran politician was addressing a doa and iftar mahfil arranged by Dhaka City Awami League at a local hotel.
Awami League Presidium members Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, acting AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, among others, were present at the function.
"Our leader Sheikh Hasina and many others are yet to be released fully. Jubo League general secretary Mirza Azam was re-arrested from jail gate even though he was granted bail by the High Court. This is their shameless misrule," Zillur Rahman said.
He said now one of the major demands of the AL was the permanent release of its President Sheikh Hasina. "We won't move an inch from the demand of Sheikh Hasina's release."
He suggested the government advisers to take lesson from the history of the misrules of Ayub Khan, Yahia Khan and Ziaur Rahman, and hand over power to an elected government as soon as possible.
"You (government) had promised to arrange the parliamentary polls by December this year. Now keep your promise," he reminded.
Zillur questioned the rationale of keeping the state of emergency in effect, as the country was not facing any emergency situation.
