Political parties\\\' coop sought to implement budget

Saturday, 7 June 2014

Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta, MP, Friday urged all the political parties, including BNP, to extend cooperation in implementing the proposed budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year, reports BSS.
"Really, I can feel the pains of BNP. I can also realise the cause behind their heart-burning. Their main problem lies in presenting a budget of a big amount of money by AL, which they couldn't do. So, I would call upon Khaleda Zia to choose the path of democracy extending us her cooperation. We need your cooperation for implementation of such a big budget," he said.
Mr Sengupta, also a senior parliamentarian of the ruling AL, made the call while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on current politics at the auditorium of the Institution of Diploma Engineers at Kakrail in the city.
Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion with its adviser Haji Md Selim, MP, in the chair. Former joint secretary of AL Mozaffar Hossain Poltu, Dhaka City AL Vice-president Faezuddin Miah and Samyabadi Dal leader Haroon Chowdhury were the discussants, among others.
Mr Sengupta said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government presented the largest budget in the history of Bangladesh, which BNP couldn't. You (BNP) have read the book meant for thousands (crores) and so you couldn't present a budget of lakhs of crores. If you have any suggestions regarding the budget you can place them. We shall humbly look into your suggestions."
Terming the remarks of BNP on the budget as absurd and full of vengeance, the senior Awami League leader posed a question as to whether it was unethical when Ziaur Rahman placed the budget.  "Those who do not possess any ethics and have no base of ethics should not raise any question regarding ethics," he added.
Criticising the recent remarks of some BNP leaders that the present government is an unconstitutional one, Suranjit Sengupta said, "The present government is one hundred per cent constitutional. It's natural that we would be elected unopposed if you didn't take part in the polls."
Hailing the budget as a time-befitting one, the senior Awami League leader said, "With the implementation of the budget we would not only become a mid-income nation but would transform the country as a state of middle-class people. It's not merely our claim but eminent economists of the world think so."
