Political parties wrap up campaigns

Political parties wrapped up campaigns midnight Saturday in the run-up to the eventful December 29 general election after seven years of the previous general elections held in 2001.
Campaigning was hectic Saturday with all the political parties and their alliances displaying the largest possible showdowns holding rallies, bringing out processions, playing loud speakers in support of their respective candidates across the country.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairperson and chief of the four-party alliance Khaleda Zia and Awami League President and chief of the grand alliance Sheikh Hasina delivered their speeches in two separate grand rallies at Palton Maidan in the capital and Laldighhi in Chittagong respectively Saturday afternoon in the latest showdowns from their party sides to woo the voters to cast their votes in their favour.
After the grand rallies the two former premiers went door to door and took part in video conferences until midnight Saturday appealing to voters to cast votes in their favour.
Other political parties including Jatiya Party, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Bikolpo Dhara, Islami Oikya Jote and Workers Party were also in hectic campaign Saturday apart from taking part in their alliance's programmes.
Traffic congestion was unbearable Saturday afternoon as the political party activists took to streets in their latest electoral campaign before the onslaught of the chilly night on the last day for electoral campaign.
Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia addressed the nation in their televised speeches in all the local TV channels, which were also broadcast through the state-owed Bangladesh Television (BTV).
The state-owned radio, Bangladesh Betar, also broadcast their speeches.
In total 299 constituencies out of the 300 - the BNP has 262 candidates and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami has 36 candidates. Three BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami candidates are vying in three constituencies in parallel.
Islami Oikya Jote is contesting in two constituencies from the four-party alliance, while Bangladesh Jatiya Party and Jatiya Gantotantrick Party are contesting in two remaining constituencies.
