Politics turning suicidal: Quader
Saturday, 3 July 2010
Awami League (AL) Leader Obaidul Quader said the country's politics is turning suicidal day by day.
"The politicians are losing their reliability with the public as a result, politics of division and bloodshed was on the rise", he added.
Quader was addressing a discussion on 'healthy politics, proper leadership and current situation', reports bdnews24.com.
Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion at the city's Dhaka Reporters' Unity office Friday.
About June 27's general strike, he said both the sides had gone to the extremes during the shutdown. "Firstly, the attack on BNP Leader Mirza Abbas and MP Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie was too much on the government's part."
"And secondly, the arson attack on Mohammad Faruk Hossain and serious injury to Public Works Department Engr Abul Kashem were extreme acts by the opposition."
He said both the sides would have to take responsibilities for the incidents.
Referring to the rise of the army-backed caretaker government, the former minister said, "Would not hartal and anarchy bring forth another regime of ill-governance and darkness? Haven't we learnt anything from 1/11?"
He said it was impossible to topple a democratically elected government through general strikes and agitation. "It would be better if the main opposition comes to parliament in response to the Prime Minister's call and raise their demands there."
Quader said that it was essential to change the mentality of political leaders for the development of the country.
