Polls didn't get acceptability at home and abroad: Rizvi

FE REPORT | Monday, 15 January 2024

Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Sunday that the just-held general election did not get acceptability in the country and also abroad.
Speaking at a press briefing at the party central office in the capital's Naya Paltan area, Mr Rizvi said the government would be compelled to hold a fresh election under a neutral caretaker government.
He also said democratic forces in the country and abroad expressed reactions filled with indignation against the government for holding 'farcical election' on January 7, 2024.
He said, "The people of the country have shown 'red card' to the government."
"Even the defeated candidates of the ruling Awami League have also said the election was a farcical one and marked with rigging."
Mr Rizvi further said that the government held the 12th parliamentary national election on January 7, 2024 through oppression and suppression on the opponents and keeping the party office of BNP under lock and key.
He claimed that the government is now absolutely panic-stricken though it showed 'a joyous and boastful gesture' since after the polls.
"Awami League remains in power by leaning to the foreign powers. BNP is not looking to anyone (foreign countries)," he said.
He alleged that the government is being over joyous imbued with the courage from foreign powers.
