Polls in Sreepur UZ postponed

Fearing violence, the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday postponed election to Sreepur upazila (UZ), Gazipur which was scheduled to be held on March 15. Talking to reporters at the EC Secretariat at noon, Election Commissioner Abu Hafiz said, "The election (to Sreepur upazila parishad) has been postponed due to fear of violence and lack of an election-friendly environment.” Earlier, election to Fenchuganj upazila parishad in Sylhet was put on hold following a court order. With the postponement of polls in the two upazilas, now 81 upazilas will go to polls on March 15 in the third phase of the staggered local body elections, according to a news agency.
