Polls uncertainty looms as BNP sticks to its stand

Thursday, 13 November 2008

Insistence on fulfilling 7-point demand by BNP, meaning allowing its leaders convicted under the emergency power rules to take part in polls, has created a deadlock showing no sign of immediate end toward holding the election set for December 18, reports UNB.
"Lift emergency completely, create level playing ground and atmosphere for free, fair and neutral election. We will go to polls today," BNP secretary general said harping on the party's stand.
Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said a couple of days ago some of the demands of BNP had been implemented and expressed willingness to discuss on others. Since then no progress has been made.
Speaking at a 4-party alliance meeting at the Diploma Engineers Institute Wednesday afternoon, Delwar accused the government of shackling the judiciary.
"High Court can stay conviction by a lower court and enlarge on bail the aggrieved person. But even the willing judges of the High Court could not do it in case of conviction under the emergency rules. The emergency rules have brought into force only to debar BNP leaders from taking part in the election," said Delwar referring to the conviction of scores of prospective BNP candidates in the election.
