Polls underway in 73 UZs

Amid heightened security over concerns of possible violence and bloodshed, balloting began simultaneously in 5,534 polling stations in 73 upazilas (UZ) in 34 districts from 8:00am on Monday. Local administration officials and voters said no major untoward incident happened in any polling centres in the 73 UZs till filing this report at 10:00 am. This is the fifth phase of voting in the 4th Upazila Parishad elections in the country. The balloting in 34,885 polling booths in the 5,534 voting centres will end at 4:00pm. The government has declared a general holiday in the 73 UZs today. Campaigns ended at midnight on Saturday with 1,059 aspirants in the fray. Of them, 362 are running for chairman, 418 for vice-chairman and 276 for female vice-chairman, according to a news agency.
