Popularise broccoli cultivation

Tuesday, 1 July 2014

Cauliflower is a winter vegetable in Bangladesh. It is grown in huge quantity throughout the country. The vegetable is very popular among people. As cauliflowers are grown in a huge quantity in peak season, its prices come down to such a low level that growers become frustrated as they suffer huge losses.
Broccoli is another winter vegetable but is grown in a very small quantity in Bangladesh. It looks like cauliflower but its colour is green, not milky white. Broccoli is a high-valued vegetable from nutritional point of view. It is full of vitamin, mineral and anti-oxidant, but comparatively dearer. So the common people can not often afford to buy them.
The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) needs to import broccoli seeds and distribute those among the cauliflower farmers. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) should encourage farmers to allocate half of their lands, which they usually use for cauliflower cultivation, to grow broccoli. The DAE should also transfer know-how to farmers to grow broccoli.
The Bangladeshis need to benefit from nutritional advantages of broccoli as well as cauliflower. Farmers will also get reasonable prices as both will be grown in required quantities. Moreover, broccoli will earn more money for the farmers.
I urge the BADC and the DAE to take a project to popularise broccoli cultivation throughout the country.
