The government will start national population and household census 2011, fifth of its kind, from March next year aimed at updating Bangladesh's population and household numbers after ten years since 2001, officials said Thursday.
Planning Minister AK Khandker at a meeting with the press said that the country's lone statistical department - Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) - will collect information from every household across the country during March 15-19 next year.
Bangladesh, one of the most densely populated countries in the world, conducts population census in every ten years since 1981 though its first survey was done in 1974 after liberation in 1971.
In the last population census in 2001, the country's total population stood at 130.52 million and the number of households at 25.49 million.
In the discussion, Mr Khandker sought support of the media to inform and make people aware about the upcoming census.
Secretary of the statistical division Mrs Reeta Ibrahim said the BBS would utilise modern technology this time to collect some 25 types of information from each individual on the household, house and personal matters.
During March 15-19 next year, 0.33 million enumerators would go to every house and floating place for collecting information aimed at compiling a preliminary report in three months.
"After verifications and checks, the BBS will publish a final census report within 24 months. We have a plan to give a registration number to each of the individuals compiling his/her data and information," she said.
