Population control deserves priority

Thursday, 20 August 2009

THE projections of population growth of Bangladesh released on the occasion of the last World Population Day are indeed worrisome. Bangladesh population is expected to double almost to 280 million by 2080 and to reach 180 million by 2020, they say. It is a great challenge for the country.
Population control does not seem to be among the priorities of the new government. Other nagging problems such as energy is taking greater attention. Prudence requires that very effective steps should be taken immediately to check the alarming population growth. Otherwise, it would offset the gains made in various economic sectors.
