Port activities revive at Mongla

Our Correspondent | Sunday, 8 March 2009

KHULNA, Mar 07: At least five cargo ships anchored this week at the problem-ridden Mongla Port restoring normal harbour activities and infusing enthusiasm among the idle workers and staff.

Port authority source said that five ships carrying fertiliser and some other cargoes anchored at the port. The ships are MV Banglar Momota, Panama flag carrier ships MV Viana and Gim Plus, MV Wing Moni and Cypriot flag carrier MV Lady.

Mongla port, the country's second major sea-port after Chittagong, remained virtually idle for long time without any movement of ships and loading and unloading activities.

Hundreds of dock workers and port staff were left with uncertainties about their future in absence of normal port operations, official sources said adding that the dock workers were back to their duties with the arrival of the ships.

Member (Operation) of the port Lutfar Rahman informed that the port would turn into a modern port of the world after the construction of the Padma Bridge at Maowa and dredging of the channels adjacent to the port.
