Port users for allowing over 200-metre long ships at Mongla Port

Our Correspondent | Monday, 29 September 2014

KHULNA, Sept 28: Different organisations of port users demanded withdrawal of the ban on entry of ships measuring more than 200 metres in length at Mongla port. The port users said that measuring less than 200 metres in length ships are not in use in the world market for the purposes of export and import. As a result exporters and importers have to wait for months for the ships having the length of less than 200 metres. The port authority issued a notice barring ships, longer than 200-metre,from entering the port on question of navigability and safety.
Sources said that different types of questions arose over the entry of ships longer than 200 metres at port recently.  The importers claim that ships shorter than 200 metres are not available in the world market to import flat goods.
Mongla Port Authority Chairman Commodore H R Bhuyan said that the notice was given for the sake of safety, depth and width of the channel.
