Potato cultivation in Rangpur in full gear

RANGPUR Dec 11: Potato cultivation is going on in full swing in 8 upazilas of Rangpur district and the farmers are expecting a bumper production of potato in this season.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources a total of 57,761 hectares of land have been brought under potato cultivation in 8 upazilas of Rangpur district with a production target of 10,10,118 metric tonnes.
Of the total some 15,200 hectares of land have been brought under Rangpur Sadar Upazila and the production target is 2,66,000 metric tonnes, 5,400 hectares in Kaunia upazila with a production target of 95,000 metric tonnes, 10,700 hectares in Mithapukur upazila and the production target is 1,87,000 Metric tonnes, 4,700 hectares in Pirgonj upazila while the production target is 83,000 Metric tonnes, 5,400 hectares in Gangachara upazila with a production target of 94,500 metric tonnes, 10,100 hectares in Pirgachha with a the production target of 1,76,000 M. tonnes, 2,600 hectares in Badargonj with a production target of 63,000 M tonnes, 3,661 hectares in Taragonj upazila with a the production target of 45,618 M.tonnes.
When asked as to why are they interested in cultivating potatoes despite post-storage fiasco a few months ago the farmers said the present price of potato is quite satisfactory and they are optimistic about getting fair price this time after harvesting.
Sources said, the prices of fertilisers are cheaper than those of the last year's. One bag (50 Kg) of MOP is being sold at Tk 750 only against the previous price of Tk 1750 one year before. One bag (50 Kg) of TSP sells at Tk 1300 while the price of the same was Tk 2000 before.
Deputy assistant agriculture officer Abdul Khaleq told the FE that the target might exceed if the weather remains favourable.
Anisur Rahman (45) a potato farmer of Mithapukur upazila said he is happy to sow potato seeds as the prices of seeds and fertiliser are reasonable and he is expecting a bumper production of potato this season, he added.
