RAJSHAHI, Nov 29: Potato farmers of the district are facing a big setback this year in potato cultivation due to non-availability of adequate fertilisers and their soaring prices, sources said.
The cultivation of potato has begun in the areas in the full swing. But the farmers are not getting enough seeds and fertilisers according to their demand.
According to the sources, potato cultivation will continue until December.
The FE correspondent, while visiting the local markets, found that potash fertiliser, which was sold at Tk 800 to Tk 900 per bag, DAP (di-ammonium phosphate) at Tk 1,100 to Tk 1,200, TSP (triple-super phosphate) at Tk 1,200 and gypsum at Tk 120 per bag a month ago, are now being sold at Tk 2,000, Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,200, Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,200 and Tk 200 per bag respectively.
But even with the high prices of fertilisers, only a few people are getting enough fertilisers to meet up their demands.
Barind area of Rajshahi is famous for potato production. But this year the farmers are disappointed because of seed and fertiliser crisis.
