Potatoes in cold storages hit by power outage

FE Report | Monday, 9 March 2009

Preservation of potatoes in cold storages is being seriously hampered due to erratic and low-voltage power supply.

Rampant power outage in different parts of the country has been affecting the quality of potatoes kept in cold storages as frequent power failures and low voltage has been forcing the quality to deteriorate, said a press release issued by Bangladesh Cold Storage Association (BCSA).

About 300 cold storages would preserve potatoes in March and April and power outage makes it risky to preserve the produce.

The association urged the government to instruct Bangladesh Power Development Board, Rural Electrification Board and Dhaka Power Distribution Company to supply uninterrupted power supply to the cold storage to preserve potatoes.
