Potential for export diversification

Saturday, 3 November 2007

BANGLADESH has earned a good amount of foreign exchange by exporting fruits since the entry of related items to its export basket. This is one area of non-traditional export goods. On its part, Thailand earns several billion US dollars a year from export of fruits and fruit products.
Bangladesh has immense potential for export of a wide range of fruits and flowers and so also for diversification of its export basket. With entrepreneurs taking interest in export of furniture, jewellery and crabs and other items through their efforts for diversification of exports, they can earn a lot. Kitchen items hike from chillies and vegetables can be exported in much greater quantities. But the export of these items will need official support and facilitation.
Unconventional exportables can increase in number if the government takes a programme to develop new export products and give incentives to export them. In such new product development, stress must be on quality and packaging for sustained marketing.
