Potential of Bilonia Land Port yet to be tapped

Saturday, 9 October 2010

FENI, Oct 8 (UNB): The Government could earn huge revenue through the Bilonia Land Port if it was provided with necessary infrastructural facilities, port users said Thursday.
Although the land port started its operation one year back no necessary development has taken place so far.
Despite having numerous difficulties, Tk 135.0 million (13.5 crore) was earned by this time exporting goods to India through the port while no goods were imported from India.
The port was inaugurated on October 4, 2009 but it is still running without a warehouse, truck yard, shed, way bridge, scanning machine, weighing machine, street light, chemical laboratory, housing facilities of the customs officials, sewerage system and water supply facilities.
Bangladesh exported 3,451 tonnes brick, 30,190 tonnes cement, 2,694 tonnes stone chips and 1200 kgs dried fish to the Tripura state of India through this port.
Bilonia land port exporters-importers association's secretary Julfiker Ali Bhutto said there was no arrangement for dumping goods in the Indian side.
Unloading of goods from Bangladeshi truck to Indian truck is time consuming and the Indian BSF troops usually misbehave during unloading of goods, he alleged.
