NILPHAMARI, Apr 4: Potter families in Nilphamari district are in dire financial crisis. There are a few thousand of potters in Nilphamari district who maintain their livelihood through making earthenwares. The lone input necessary to make earthenware is called Kumar Mati or potter's soil. It is found only in some particular places. The potters purchase those from there but at present the price of it has gone up substantially. In making curd and keeping molasses pottery is indispensable. Besides pitcher, jar, dish and so on are being used by the poor class of people as utensils. Sources said now tiles are being exported from Satkhira and some other districts to the foreign countries including Italy and besides being earning valuable foreign exchange, thousands of potters are finding employment opportunity there. Sources added there are 500 potter families stretching all over the district. Moreover there are hundreds of hawkers who hawk earthenware's from door to door. If proper initiative is taken and if improved technology and incentive is provided this cottage industry may contribute substantially to the national economy.
