Poultry farm owners stage demos in Dhamrai

Tuesday, 1 April 2014

Poultry farm owners blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway at Dulidanga bus stand in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka on Tuesday to press home their various demands, including stopping egg import from India and cutting fodder prices. Other demands of the farm owners include increasing the price of locally produced eggs, shutting down all commercial farms run by different companies, providing loan to farmers at low interest rate and insurance facility to them and taking steps to export eggs of small farmers. During the protest programmes, the farmers destroyed some 20,000 eggs on the highway venting their anger over market price of eggs that is less than the production cost. Many farmers were seen lying on the highway in protest. Later, a team from Dhamrai Police Station rushed to the spot and forced the protesters to leave the highway, according to a news agency.
