SIRAJGANJ, Sept 27: Some 500 poultry farms are facing closure due to an acute shortage of chicks, sources said.
Hatcheries cannot produce chicks for want of eggs. Farm owners also cannot produce improved variety of poultry feed because of the prevailing high price of medicine over the last couple of two weeks.
The price of chicken has increased by Tk 25 to Tk 35 each. Poultry birds are now being sold between Tk 78 to Tk 82 per kg.
According to local poultry farmers, there are at least 7,000 poultry farms in the district. Most of them were set up by unemployed youths who received financial support from the government's Youth Development Directorate, BRAC Bank, Islami Bank, RAKUB and NGOs.
Besides, a number of young entrepreneurs have established poultry farms at their own initiatives including Abdur Rahim (35), Ali Reza (31) and Abdul Hamid (30) of Sadar Upazila.
Scarcity of eggs is retarding poultry farming in the district, they said.
