Poultry feed producers making windfall profit

CHITTAGONG, Mar 23: Despite significant decline in price of maize, main ingredient of poultry feeds and price of poultry feed have not been reduced proportionately in the markets of the port city and its adjoining areas.
Price of maize has scaled down by Tk 10,000 to 12,000 per tonne while that of poultry feed has been reduced by only Tk 500 to 800, concerned sources said.
Under such an unhealthy practices in business, owners of the feed mills have been deriving windfall profit while the farmers and consumers community are incurring huge financial losses.
According to the sources, main raw materials of making poultry feed are maize and soy meal. Each kilogramme (kg) of maize was sold at Tk 23 or Tk 24 two months' back, which has now dropped to tk 14 to 15. In a similar manner, another item soy meal, which was sold at a rate of Tk 30 to Tk 32 per kg earlier, is now being sold at Tk 24 to Tk 25.
While the price of maize and soy meal rose two months back, each kg of poultry feed was sold at Tk 26 and a single sack of 50-kg was sold at Tk 1300.
With decline in price of raw materials for manufacturing poultry feed, no significant fall in price of poultry feed is yet in sight.
Sources claimed, due to excess price of poultry feed, many small sized poultry farms have already been closed down.
