Poultry growers face losses as price falls

JOYPURHAT, Nov 11: Poultry industry of Joypurhat now under threat raising price of poultry feed and medicine and others inputs and sudden fall of chicken's price. Around 40 per cent farms had been closed and the percentage is increasing day by day, said the farm owner association sources.
Recently, the price of poultry feed and medicine have been increased at a higher level and the price has been reduced, as a result, the growers are facing great loss. Some of them have closed their farm.
About Tk 100 have been increased for per sack poultry feed. It is being sold at Tk 1500 to 1650 per sack and as per quality. It was sold at Tk 1300 to 1450 two month ago. Percentage, the price of a big hen Sonali is Tk 130 to 135 per kg while rearing cost per kg is Tk 125 to 135. Only 15 days ago the price of Sonali chicken was Tk 160 to 170 per kg. Boiler hen is being sold Tk 100 to 110 per kg in whole sale instead of Tk 130 to 140 a couple of weeks ago. Its rearing cost is Tk 100 to 110 per kg. Comparatively a growers is facing loss of Tk 10 to 15 per kg, sources said.
About 10,000 farms had been set-up in the 5 Upazilas in the district in last few years. Due to the high prifit, this Industry was increasing rapidly day by day. A total of 10 private and 1 government hatcheries have beenestablished in the area. For supplying feed to the farms, 10 feed mills have been established in the district.
According to the district Livestock office, the registered and unregistered farms produce about 10,000 tones of foul meat against the demand of 1900 tones. The surplus meat are supplied to the other area. About 0.10 million people are involved directly and indirectly in the industry. If this sector is badly hit and the poultry farms go out of business, a large number of people will face economic trash.
