Power crisis hits Boro cultivation in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Feb 28: Boro cultivation is being seriously hampered due to insufficient electricity supply and damaged seedlings. As a result Boro production target may not be achieved this season in the district. District Agriculture office sources told this correspondent that Boro paddy will not be cultivated in more than 85 per cent of total cultivable land in the district this season. Because, the relevant authority could not be supply sufficient electricity according to the demand of the Boro farmers. Besides this, at least 30 per cent seedlings of Boro seedbed were damaged due to dense fog. Halal Sardar, a farmer, of Choto Boali under Shivalaya Upazila said that only some farmers had completed planting Boro seedlings. But most of them could not transplant Boro seedlings in proper time due to frequent load shedding and low voltage. Sahrab Hossain, a farmer of Tara Village under Chior Upazila, said that the shortage of electricity supply seriously hampered transplantation of Boro seedlings. RCS orientation programme The two-day long orientation programme ended under community development programme in Manikganj Thursday. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society arranged the programme with the assistance of IFRC for its officials of Proshika Manobik Unnayn Kendra at Kaitta under Saturia Upazila in the district. 24 trainees attended the orientation from the working areas of Natore, Nilpamari, Magura and Kushtia. Alhaz professor Dr. M S Akbar Ali, Chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, inaugurated the programme. Mrs. Sabina Yesmin, Junior Assistant Director of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, moderated the function.
