The government would be able to bring equilibrium between electricity demand and supply across the country by 2013, Finance Minister A M A Muhith said Wednesday.
"An additional 2,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity would be added to the national grid by the next year as part of the government's continuous effort to augment electricity generation," said the minister.
The finance minister made the comments while inaugurating the first-ever National Electricity Week (NEW) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
This year's NEW is being observed from December 8-12 across the country to promote efficient energy use and to make people aware of electricity saving.
Speaking on the occasion Muhith also said the long-pending National Coal Policy would be finalised by June 2011 to utilise the country's huge coal reserve.
He said the government is working to establish electricity trades with neighbouring countries like India, Nepal and Bhutan.
"We are also working to tap the country's renewable energy prospects," he said.
Alongside the government move to augment electricity generation the finance minister stressed the need for reducing system loss, which now stands at around 13 to 14 per cent.
There are scopes to slash down system loss to around eight per cent, he said. He recalled that system loss was more than 30 per cent 30 years ago.
Muhith also stressed the need for proper electrification of the rural areas to ensure equity in overall development of the country.
