Power disruption affects businesses in capital

FE Report | Thursday, 4 September 2014

Electricity disruption has severely affected businesses, commercial and normal day-to-day activities second time within a week Wednesday, due to technical glitch in a city power substation, said officials.
Electricity supply was disrupted at least for several hours at a stretch from Wednesday afternoon at many city areas due to the technical problem.
This time 'lightening eruption' in the city's Ulan electricity substation at Rampura caused the mayhem, a senior official of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) claimed.
He acknowledged that many parts of the city, including Motijheel, Dhanmondi, Mogbazar, Paltan, Eskaton, Hatirjhil, Azimpur, New Market, Gulistan and Khilgaon, were affected due to the faulty substation.
Electric equipments in many areas were damaged due to the problem that caused frequent outages and low voltage of electricity, consumers alleged.
Their backup power systems, like - instant power system (IPS), also failed to provide electricity in absence of supply from the grid. Emergency services in hospitals were affected badly, they added.
"This is absurd," a consumer of Motijheel area reacted.
"It cannot be acceptable, as we are paying higher tariff and the government is claiming a significant development in power sector," he added.
The BPDB official said electricity supply started to get back normalcy from Wednesday evening. Normalcy in electricity supply will be restored by night, he hoped.
Officials said electricity supply was severely hampered in almost half of the city areas last Thursday, when circuit breaker tripped in the same substation.
