The Power Division has sought to pump up the budgetary target in the next fiscal year by Tk 50 billion (Tk 5,000 crore) for implementation of its different development projects successfully, officials said.
"The division has sought an additional allocation of Tk 50 billion in the next ADP (Annual development program) to implement the ongoing and fresh projects during the next fiscal year (FY) 2016-17," a senior finance ministry official told the FE.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has recently sent a letter to the finance minister in this regard.
The government has fixed an allocation of over Tk 125.40 billion to the ADP of the power division for the next FY. Of the amount, over Tk 62.44 billion has been allocated from the government's own fund and the rest Tk 62.96 billion from external development aid money, according to the letter.
Some Tk 50 billion will be required for implementation of new and approved projects in the ADP of the next fiscal year.
The Power Division official said it will be very difficult to carry out the planned power sector works in the FY 2017 if the division is not provided with the funds for the ADP.
Earlier, the PC has hinted that the Power Division is likely to get lesser development funds in the next FY.
In the current FY 2015-16, the Power Division received Tk 154.78 billion in the revised ADP for implementing its projects including generation, transmission and distribution lines.
The government is committed to generate 20,000 MW of electricity by FY 2021 for which it needs investment worth billions of dollars.
According to the power sector master plan 2010, the country's anticipated peak demand would rise to 17,304 MW a day in FY 2020.
