The power division has sought an additional allocation of over Tk 183 billion for the next fiscal year (FY) to accelerate implementation of different projects, sources said.
It would be more than 132 per cent higher than that of the amount of around Tk 138 billion projected to be allocated for the FY2017-18 under the medium-term budgetary framework (MBF).
The power division submitted the requisition for the additional budget to the finance division recently, as part of a process under the MBF.
The total demand would then stand at Tk 321 billion - Tk 288 billion for the ongoing projects and Tk 33 billion for 20 fresh projects.
"We sought the money to meet increased expenditure for 80 ongoing and 20 fresh projects," a senior official of the power division told the Financial Express. It would not be possible to implement the projects without the increased allocation.
The projects were being implemented to provide quality and reliable electricity to all by 2021 - the power sector vision of the government. The government set a target to generate 24,000-megawatt of electricity by then to achieve the goal.
The additional amount would be required to implement the projects, including improvement of the transmission and distribution networks in light of the vision 2021, a senior official of the power division said.
